Whiplash Recovery: What to Expect After a Car Accident
Learn about whiplash symptoms, recovery timelines, and how physiotherapy can help you heal after a motor vehicle accident.
Understanding Whiplash and Your Recovery Journey
One moment you were stopped at a light, and then came the impact. Whiplash describes a neck injury caused by sudden head movement and can follow a collision, fall, or sports injury. Symptoms can be distressing even when scans show no serious structural injury, and understanding recovery can reduce uncertainty.
How Whiplash Symptoms Unfold
Symptoms may begin immediately or develop over several hours or days.
Neck pain, stiffness, headache, shoulder or arm pain, dizziness, fatigue, and concentration difficulty can occur. Dizziness or cognitive symptoms may also suggest concussion or another problem. Arm numbness, tingling, or weakness may indicate nerve involvement and deserves assessment.
The Road to Recovery
Recovery varies. Many people improve within two to three months, while some have symptoms longer. Fixed phases can create unhelpful expectations; progress is better tracked through sleep, movement, work, driving, and other valued activities.
How Physiotherapy Supports Your Healing
Early advice generally emphasizes reassurance, staying active, and gentle neck-specific exercise. Physiotherapy can help tailor range-of-motion, endurance, and strengthening work. Manual therapy may be used as an adjunct, but collars and prolonged rest are generally discouraged unless a clinician identifies a specific reason.
Steps to Take After an Accident
- Seek medical assessment when symptoms are significant or concerning
- Document your symptoms and track how they change over time
- Ask whether physiotherapy is appropriate; not everyone needs immediate treatment
- Stay as active as you safely can within your comfort level
- Be patient with your body as it heals
Knowing When to Get Help
Seek urgent help after a neck injury for severe pain, new weakness, numbness or tingling, difficulty walking or sitting upright, an electric-shock sensation into the limbs, repeated vomiting, confusion, worsening severe headache, or increasing drowsiness. Call 9-1-1 for loss of consciousness, seizure, or stroke-like symptoms.
Persistent symptoms deserve reassessment, but delayed treatment does not automatically cause chronic pain. Recovery is influenced by injury severity, initial pain and disability, sleep, stress, expectations, and other health factors.
